Low key intro
Hi,
basics: female, Australian - ex-Melbournian - now Londoner. My Kona mountain bike, which was my commuter*, is in a shed as I can't face a daily 26 mile round trip through London traffic**. Train/bike is out as I am on a very busy line, where if there is any problem, then not everyone on the station can even board the train, so bikes are not only banned during peak hours, but would be impossible anyway. I've got about 2.5 km at one end and 5 km*** at the other, so I'd have to buy two beaters to leave at either end.
So the upshot is that I am looking at folding bikes, and the folding bike forum here is one of the best resources I've found. I've been lurking there for a few days.
I'll post more in that forum - but I thought I should do my duty and post an intro here.

*hey - i know it's not a perfect commute vehicle, but I like the ride - so sue me!
**I just suspect my mean-time-between-broken-bones would by tiny.
*** ~= 1 1/2 and 3 miles

Hello jefcmg, sounds as if you are off to a fine start as I see you have already visited the Folder forum. Are you permanently in the UK now?

Thanks for the welcome, both of you!
Yup, permanently in the UK (though haven't got myself a passport yet) so I've updated the original to reflect my current status

Just don't bother getting a car if you're in London! The folder should get you virtually everywhere you need to go, and it won't cost you an access fee .

Welcome, welcome - I commute thru what I consider busy city traffic - but you are dealing with a lot more!
A member of my local club (he's written several bicycle traveling books) travels with his Friday bicycle around the world and loves it. And he creates quite a stir when he rides around town - and into some festivals/expositions where I've had a booth for the club - lots of people were extremely curious about the folding bike - how comfortable it is, how easily it actually folded and packed into his pack that hung over his shoulder ...
Here's a link to one piece on him - although I notice he's got a regular roadbike behind him in the pic - as I normally see him on his Friday.
