Hi Everyone!
 

I am from Kennett Square, PA. I am currently riding a Trek hybrid although I think I need to look into getting a road bike. Most of the riding I do is on paved trails and roadways and I want to ride a century. I know that I can ride the century on my hybrid but it seems to make more sense to get a bike made for the type of riding I do most. I have ridden off and on most of my adult life. My most recent reason for getting back into the sport is that my children are finally getting to an age where they can ride for distance and keep up! I am looking forward to using the forums for ideas and to meet and talk to other cycling enthusiasts.

Hi ksqcyclist, I have not really wandered into your part of PA, but it does look like some nice riding there. Do your children have bikes already, or would you be getting some for them as well?

Welcome to b/f. I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you make the leap to a road bike. The technology in road bikes today, even at the entry level, makes the sport addictive. I started on a vintage 10-speed but eventually made the transition to an entry level Trek 1000. While the old 10-speed was fun, the 1000 is in a class of it's own which just elevated my whole cycling experience.

Again welcome to b/f. If you read the various forums, you'll quickly learn that no question is too silly to ask. :rolleyes: So ask away, talk to friends, and we hope to see you on the roads soon.

I had to look up Kennett Square to see whare you were in PA, and I see you are between Philly and Lancaster.

I would suggest keeping your eyes on the NE Regional forum (and maybe Road Cycling) as summer approaches becasue a group of BikeForums riders gather each year in August for the Lancaster County Covered Bridges Metric Century. It is a good way to connect faces.

I rode 2 years ago on a Sedona DX, but because of lack of fitness, I ended up droipping at the lunch stop (symptoms of heat exhaustion). I was out of state last year, but I plan to ride again this year.

It is great that your young'uns can keep up for a distance ride.

you are in some older cranking grounds for me. i had a girlfriend who was going to University of Pennsyvania graduate veterinarian school based in philly, farm-hospital in kennet sq! i met her while on tour to nova scotia, but that's another story. wife and i just were at longwood gardens, and i am sure you have ample access to fresh mushrooms!
the South Jersey Wheelmen have 3 certified centuries, and are based in south jersey, about 20 miles s/e from commodore-berry bridge. the "get ready metric" in june, the "bridgeton zoo century" in august, and the "jersey devel century" in september are all sagged, with choice of distances (1/4, 1/2, or full dst).

Both of my children do have bikes. My son doesn't have as much interest in cycling as my daughter but will ride as much as 20 miles if I bribe well enough! :o On the other hand, my 12 year old daughter has already ridden two 50 mile rides with me. She will need a new bike this summer and will be getting a road bike for sure.

Cool! You should check into the C & V forum and look at what bigbossman did for his daughter. Run a search on 'Battaglin'.

I've looked at the Lancaster County Covered Bridges Metric Century before. If I recall correctly, that ride is hilly and I'm a whimp!!! :D

I am totally excited about the prospect of getting a road bike! Truth be told, I don't need any new reasons to be addicted to the sport... :D However, I do need someone to find a way to add hours to a week so I can have more time to ride! :)
