Greetings from the the frozen shores of Lake Huron. This looks like a forum with a great wealth of knowledge that an old recreational biker can make good use of.
I am in Benmiller Ontario having just purchased a new bike hoping that the weekend will be warm enough to at least bother to pick it up at the store. I bought it on Saturday during a 25cm snow storm. I guess I will ride the old one till I can ride salt free. One of the drawbacks of being adjacent to the worlds biggest salt mine is the fact that the roads in and out of the mine are the first ones salted.

Hi Terrence, I guess the question would be whether or not the roads are ever truly salt free in your neighbourhood ! I don't think you caused the cold--you are just one of many who's enjoying it, that's all .

Hi Terrence, welcome from a fellow Ontario resident. I don,t know where Benmiller is but I do know where the salt mine is in Goderich. Is this where Benmiller is? I toured up along there a few years back on a bike trip along the "west coast of Ontario". As I remember the salt mine is under the harbour, you can stand on the beach and see it. Goderich also has the traffic circle downtown. I cycled around it trying to figure out how to get to Hwy 21.
What kind of bike did you get, where did you buy it and where do you plan to ride?
I have been to London several times and have made the rounds of it's many excellant bike shops. Reynold Cycle really helped me out once when I had problems while loaded touring with my Trek 520, very nice people.
You will find almost anything you need to know from the BF.

By mid July you can't really tell that the roads have had many tons of salt all over them.
To East Hill thanks for the welcome. It seems to be your full time job.
To Cyberpep thanks for the welcome as well. I have been to Grafton a couple of times. I think I have left a few dollars at one of the fine antique dealers in your town. Several years ago I lost a wheel off of a trailer I was towing on the 401 and had to have a local garage find me a wheel and tire. A few days later I returned and continued my trip.
I just purchased a Schwinn Locura to replace my 21 or 22 year old Maruishi Fatrax. Not too sexy a ride but it seems to be a solid bike with a good warranty.
I was in Sombra today on business and stopped in at "The Bicycle Shop" in Sarnia on my way home and was looking at a new rack and panniers. I'm an MEC member but these folks are likely going to get my business. I will donate my old rack with the bike. Or perhaps I will keep the old bike and buy it a trainer for next winter. I tried one today at "The Bicycle Shop" ( a Trek I believe) and was quite impressed. It is a very nice store with helpful and knowledgeable staff. They sell Trek, Specialized, Kona and Marinoni bikes and have a really good selection of parts and accessories.
Benmiller, Cyberpep, is about 10KM to the Nor'east of Goderich and is on the Maitland trail. We are also passed by the GART (Goderich Auburn Rail Trail) which is a trail on a de-tracked CP rail line.
I keep a sailboat at Bayfield about 25KM south and enjoy riding there on weekends.

No, not a full time job, but I am an enthusiastic supporter of this cycling community, and I like to make everyone feel as welcome as possible. I sure do get to know a lot more names this way, too!
