New from Cleveland, OH
Hello everyone,
I actually haven't ridden much in the past ten years, but am slowly getting back into it. i recently purchased an '08 Diamondback Sorrento. Still getting used to it, I haven't really done much off of the pavement, as I am still trying to get a feel for the bike. I have ridden about 70 miles in the past 2 weeks though, and feel really good. I think that the shifter cables have stretched and need adjustment, but shouldn't be a real problem. I actually just withdrew from my old hobby, and thought this would be a much better investment. I spent a lot of time and money into a car for drag racing. Don't get me wrong, but the thrill of being behind the wheel is exhillerating, but It is pretty expensive, and was just not finacially feesible at the time. Thankfully, I have started a new hobby, unfortunately, I live in Cleveland so there isn't much riding in the winter. Anyways, I just thought that I'd say hello!

Hi 4whlpl, I think drag racing would definitely eat into my household budget a lot more than riding a bike does! Still, you can get a lot of enjoyment out of two wheels, with your own engine providing the exhilaration 
.
There's a Winter Cycling forum just for people who live in places where the tough get going when the going gets tough! Seriously, it's possible to get out and ride in the winter, and it can be fun.

Hello 4whlpl! Welcome. I live in Mentor, just a few miles ease of you and I know what you mean about not being able to ride all year. When I lived in SoCal i could go out any time but being here I guess I need to get a stationary bike for use during the winter. I am back riding everyday to work and home and was out this year as soon as the ice was off of the streets. It feels so good! Don.

Now I know why nobody in NE Ohio can drive worth a darn in the snow, let alone ride a bike in the winter...nobody is from here anymore! Anyone who grew up here was smart enough to leave...and only a few of us went brain damaged and came back!

Chipcom, I know what you mean. This past winter was just too much for my wife and I. We plan to move to Tennessee where my daughter lives. I hope that down there my riding months will be more than here.I know that in general it is a lot warmer. Don.

Riding here in the winter really isn't that bad...heck even winters are not that bad. The roads are clear for 80% of the winter and the temps rarely go below zero. Dress decently and you CAN ride all year, like I do. If you wanna get crazy (like me) you can even build you up a snow beater!

Chipcom, How do you deal with the ice and bad snow piled at the sides of the roads?Do you slip around? The snow beater sounds good as I would not want salt on my good commuter. Sitting it out last winter almost killed me as I went from riding every day to nothing over night.

For ice and snowy roads, studded tires are great. As far as what is piled on the sides of the roads, I follow the law and ride as far to the right as practicable...if there is a snow pile, obviously it's not practicable to ride there - I usually keep to the right tire track anyway unless there is a nice wide, crap-free shoulder. As long as you are visible (good lights, bright clothing, lots of reflective bits) and ride predictably and courteously, the cars give you plenty of space. Being all bundled up and riding in the winter, they probably figure you got enough problems and feel sorry for you!
