New guy from MN, looking for advice
Hello to all,
Well I'm a 23 year old college student and plan to buy a bike soon so I don't have to use my car everyday. I am new to biking as a hobby/commuting. I haven't ridden a bike for years (sadly). I am trying to find a bike that I can use for going back and forth to work/uptown for a few groceries maybe. My town is small (Morris, Mn) so the work commute wouldn't be long. I also want to maybe go for a 5 or 10 mile bike ride somedays just for fun. Any ideas of what kind of bike? I've learned so far a road bike might be good but the bike dealer said maybe a hybrid bike (the Transend DX). I want to stay close to $200 for my price, up to $300. Any advice would be nice.
Thanks
Dan

The Trans End would work quite well for your purpose. A road bike is good for riding fast, but doesn't make a really good commuter unless you can travel very light, and road bikes are not really good for hauling groceries, either.

Hi Dan and welcome to Bike Forums!
I have a hybrid and for me it gives me the flexibility of riding it on road as well as a little bit of non road paths. It's by no means a mountain bike, but you don't have to be as careful with it as you do a road bike. It usually will have the mountain bike gearing on it.

Hey thank you both for your advice and input. I'll have to consider further which bike would suit my purposes the best and figure out what I'd use it the most for. I'll try to inquire further in the other forums to get a better idea. Thanks again!

I just bought a Scwinn Trailway Hybrid that seems to fill the bill for me. Its a heavier duty bike than the road bikes but still fairly lightweight. It has 21 speeds - 7 sprockets in the back and 3 in front. Shifting is really easy. This bike was $219 at Target.
