nOOb in South Pa

Hi All, Im a total noob to riding and havent been on a bike in 10 yrs. I just started on a stationary as part of rehab and am wanting to by a bike to continue but have no clue where to start. Im 6'5" and weigh 270lbs(rehab is for a knee injury) and have totally changed all my diet habits, lost 20lbs in the past 4 weeks and have a goal to reach of 200lbs before the end of the year. I would love some help in which way to go, I have a bunch of light trails in my area and plan to be a weekend rider. I was thinking a hybrid bike or a mountain bike but I have no clue what to look for. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi there! It sounds as if you are on the right track in terms of losing weight, and getting healthy. We have a ton of subforums here that I'm sure can answer all of your questions, and more! :giver:

We have a few things in common. I also had knee surgery ... back in 2001. I was a mountain biker only back then. However, my surgery pushed me toward the road for rehab. I now ride both, and can't believe I didn't jump into the word of road cycling earlier.

The other thing? Yup, I'm also from PA! :thumb:

Oh yeah ............. many welcomes to BikeForums!

Hi Chef and welcome. I went from a mtn. bike, to a hybrid, to a road bike. I still own all 3 of them and I still ride them from time to time. The road bike is my newest, I got it this past winter, and I will tell you it's the most comfortable for long rides on the road. If you think your going to ride mostly on the road then I would skip right to a road bike, it you want to do some dirt roading and stone bike paths then I'd say to get a hybrid.
I'm also in PA. Washington County.

Hi chefhow, check out the Clydesdales/Athenas forum. A great bunch of motivational folks over there, and they can help you figure out the best bike for you.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

Hi Chef...welcome to the funn... I mean forums. By coincidence I just happen to be in PA at the moment (Carlilse area) but will be heading home early in the morning. You can ride on anything that works for you. For some road and some trail riding I would check out some hybrids. Stay away from shock absorbing seat posts and forks if you can (tho the forks aren't all bad).

Aaron:)
