New member to the Bike Forums. We've been out of bicycling for over a decade.

Our TV, after suffering a long downhill slide, finally quit a coupla months ago. As we were getting in the car to replace it, I suggested that maybe buying a cheap little econocar would be a better purchase. It would pay for itself in gas savings and we could pop a DVD in the PC if we absolutely had to get a video fix.

My wife upped the ante by suggesting we get a tandem bicycle and pedal our 14.5 mile commute. Yeah, right. We work 12 hour shifts, rotating schedule. I couldn't picture pedaling home after working all night and trying to sleep.

I'm 6'0" and my wife is 4'11". Bit of a challenge to find a bike that would work.

We bought an X/S 2005 Cannondale (brand-new but hadn't found an owner) and so far so good. Pedaling home after a niteshift isn't a lot of fun yet but doesn't seem to interfere with sleep. Installing racks and fenders around the disc brakes is a challenge. Terry Liberator X and Y seats on order. Planning on getting a Thudbuster ST for stoker. Probably get some Conti Ultra Gators to replace the IRC's.

Still haven't got a new TV.

It seems incredibly convenient to be able to commute on a tandem...

Most commuters are on their own.

You may want to share your experiences in the Commuting or Tandem forums. You are likely to find some good encouragement in either of those forums to get you through those days when the commute seems a little hard.

Wow, that is very cool! I wish I had been able to persuade my husband to ride a tandem when we still worked at the same building and had the same hours!
