Want to get fit
Hello! I'm Large Filipino from Colorado. Right off you may think I don't belong here for I ride a Schwinn Cruiser bike with a Gas Rack mount. But we all deal with the same situations when it comes to traffic. I only use my engine when I can't pedal anymore and I haven't driven my truck in over a month now.
I came off a quintuple bypass about a year ago and eventually I want to graduate to a bicycle without assist so I can really get fit and live a long life.
I'm currently at 270 last I weighed myself but I quit smoking from a habit that started at 14 after my surgery. With just my lack of smoking I find some endurance I haven't experienced since high school. It's amazing what smoking takes away.
I'm on a diet of salads and meat maybe once a week but I do still sometimes cheat. I find when I have a craving I ride my old school 10 speed no engine around the block. That gets me tired pretty quick though surprisingly.
I think of you riders every time I see you guys out there as a step up of what I have. I just need to let some of you guys know that I would love to ride my 30 miles one way trips on a regular bike but right now I gotta do what I gotta do and save money on gas by avoiding my truck.
So there's that in a nutshell. I do eventually want to get a rather light bike but right now with my weight the way it is,I think I need to lose some and get fit before a bike like that would benefit me. And the extra weight of the old school bike I got now I would guess would help me in my training to acheive that goal.
So thank you for even allowing me to post! That other bike forum let me in the door but haven't allowed me to post for over two weeks now,and he hasn't replied to my pleas.
Oh,I'm 42 years old,BTW.

Hey LF, don't worry about the bike, you are doing well to be alive if you survived a quintuple bypass. The Clydesdales/Athenas forum is perfect for you--the folks there are motivational, and non-judgemental. Some amazing stories from those folks...

Very cool! Too bad about the helmet, though.

LF,
Do not apologize for what you ride! Every little bit helps and every time you turn a crank you are making yourself stronger. My wife and I got rid of our second vehicle last week, a full sized truck no less. You mentioned that you eat meat once a week, you may want to talk to a nutritionest to set up a meal plan for you to make sure you have plenty of fuel for exercise. At 42 you have plenty of life left. Good luck.

Welcome Large Filipino, you are in a good place. Keep pedaling and you will lose some weight. Sustained efforts of moderate intensity are good for fat burning, and cycling fits the bill. I applaud your efforts!

This is a good guy, I know of him from other forums. He helps as much as he can. He's a very good addition to the forum
Good luck large filipino, and don't let some of the threads and replies on BF scare you. This forum is very lightly moderated and people get to be themselves and voice their opinions, no matter how odd they are

It's great to start wherever you are starting, with whatever bicycle you have. At some point in the future, when you're ready for it, you would find it a lot easier to ride a bicycle that allows you to enjoy cycling longer and faster. I was pretty sick too, and I'm still borderline in many ways, always just one bad day away from going back on dialysis (I've had a kidney transplant for 2 years), but still, I can get a lot more from cycling with my road bike than I could with a cruiser. This is because I can do more for the same effort. But there's no rush. Do what you can and do it safely. Get more fit and lighter first. You can do that with any bike.

If you are really driven, my suggestion to you is to plan out a schedule of riding that includes achievable
goals on a gradual timeline. Something like: Ride X miles every 2 or 3 days for 2 weeks or so, then add maybe 1 mile to the route and repeat.

Great going LP!
Allot of good folks in the same boat, so to speak, including me.
Give yourself a hand! You have just started, and that is more than the other guy.
In the begining, its all about adjustments and getting use to everything.
Stick with it!
