Attitude from Canada
Hi all, I grew up in Europe where all my commuting was done on road bikes.
Back and forth to school, later to and from work, chasing chicks, going to dates -on the bike.
When I was late I pedaled that Peugeot to twice its capability, that BB probably turned
orange from the heat at times, he he. Anyways, moved to Canada at 22, got married,
kids, a Benz, and no bike for 8 years. Last year I got back into it, and I'm enjoying it
more and more every day. Have been changing bikes a lot of course until I find the
perfect ones. I don't like carbon, don't like aero, don't like deep v-rims. My bikes are
classic tubed and are equipped with campy from the past.
There are 3 things I will NOT do even if you paid me:
-Wear spandex cycling shorts with built-in diapers
-Clip myself to a pedal and walk around in those ridiculous shoes with my toes facing up
-Eat Clif bars because that is what cyclists supposed to do
I ride the flats of Milton, Ontario, see you on the road!
Current bikes:
Schwinn Paramount 50th Anniv with Campy 50th Anniv group
Cinelli Supercorsa with Campy C-Record group
Colnago Special Krono with Campy Record

There are reasons these things are done that go beyond mere appearance

not for me.
Not for me, as I will probably never ever race. I ride the bikes in my leisure time
because I enjoy it. So wearing tight shorts to shave off a millisecond each 100 miles
is not in my interest. Pulling up on the crankarm is not important to me. Freedom to
my feet is. The diaper I don't need because I have proper Brooks seats.
As for the Clif bar, who cares what the reason is?

Hi onlysteel, I'm guessing from your user name that you have that same love for vintage bikes as I do . What are your current rides?

I am relatively new the bike world. Just really got into it this year but got hooked instantly. To compound my obsession I found a nice late 80's Canondale that must've retailed for $1000 in its day for only $70 on craigslist, and $150 it rides like a beauty!
Also I'd have to say that despite its obvious challenges, riding in the Bay Area is always an amazing experience. Coming from a competitive running background I also have to say I relish both the leisure and the competitive side of cycling, and I cherish the burning sensation you get nearing the middle to top of a climb just because you know that when you summit you feel like you're at the top of the world. I do agree that a good saddle is something that can't be replaced by lightness (e.g. Brooks) I think that if you're going to pound out a 5 hour ride or especially head out on a tour it shouldn't matter that your saddle weighs even more than a pound more. I will admit to getting a part carbon fiber bike for those faster rides though and definitely admit to wearing goofy spandex, clipping myself on and walking around on my heels in those ridiculous shoes on occasion, and eating cliff bars because that's what cyclists are supposed to do, but hey I enjoy it and more more importantly I feel like we are all contributing to making this world a healthier place... and I don't get hit because my clothes are outrageously bright. Also the cat calls don't hurt the cause of the spandex haha. Enjoy those roads, whether you're going for a personal record or just enjoying the breeze.
