Another one from Salinas, CA

Hello from the central coast of California...Salinas to be exact.

After many years of having the bike hanging on hooks in the garage, I decided to take it down, dust it off, and try it again. Yikes...the years (and pounds) have taken their toll. I figure I've got to start out kinda slow for a little bit, then work my way back. Reading the various forums here keep me inspired.

Used to ride just for recreational purposes, but considering becoming a bike commuter since work is only a few miles away. Saving gas, losing weight...yeah, it's got some convincing arguments.

Anyway, I've been lurking for a few weeks, learning things and checking out the cool bike pics. Very nice place you guys have around here.

Hi parker63, what bike has been hanging in the garage? Yeah, it's hard to beat saving gas, losing weight, AND having fun even when going to work .

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

Actually, I had two hanging on hooks in the garage. One is a '92 Univega Activa Trail cross bike, and the other is an '86 Centurion LeMans RS road bike. The Univega is the one that I brought down and intend to use for the commute.

The Centurion bike is definitely lighter, but due to a back injury I had several years ago, I not comfortable with the drop bars anymore...really bugs both my neck and back. I was wondering if I should try to change out the handlebars for something that would keep me in a more upright position, but I didn't know if it would cost more than it would be worth. The shifters are on the down tube, so all I would have to worry about would be the brakes themselves.

Anyway, for now, I'm just focusing on the Univega and trying to get myself back into shape. I will say this much: I forgot how good it felt just to feel that wind hitting your face as you're wheeling down the road. Might be a cliche, but it just sort of feels like you're flying. Awesome.

Ask around in the Classic & Vintage forum. There's a great possibility that you may find someone over there with just the right solution...

The LeMans is a nice bike--it would be a shame to put it out to pasture.
