New rider, Melbourne, Florida

Hey guys, new guy here. I'm 17, been riding my whole life. My bike is a fixed gear Huffy Sante Fe II. I'm an Eagle scout and my troop goes to the Withlacoochee Bike trail every year. The paved trail was made over an old rail line. We used to just do 25 mile round trips, with a break in the middle for lunch. In the past few years, we started doin 50 milers for the cycling badge. I've done the 50 for 3 years but it usually turns into a 70 or so with all the short trips and backtracking we might do.

I was riding round on the morning of trash day and found an old 5 speen Huffy Pro Beach Cruiser on the curb. Recruited my sisters car and got it home. It's a lot like my Sante Fe. It's in pretty bad shape. The front brake lever was missing and so was the shifter, so as of right now I have a one-speed. The front tire was replaced with a MTB tire that was the right size, but not wide enough, so i need to pick up a normal tire next trip to the bike shop. Well thats that story.

Just found this forum the other night. Glad I did.

Welcome Joe.
Melbourne's an awesome place. I'm originally from Orlando and liked going to the beach over that way.
Sounds like you're doing ok with the bikes. If you need any help, stop by the Bicycle Mechanics forum, farther down the page.
The Withlacoochee Trail looks great. I've never ridden but have visited (never with my bike ) the Brooksville trailhead, the Inverness trailhead, and the trail as it passes through Hernando.

Hi Joe, do you have before and after photos of the bike? It's always good to see a bike brought back to life.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

Here are the pics, haven't done any work yet so here are the befores.

Any coments or advice is appreciated. I don't know what I should do first. I obviously
want to be able to shift so I need to pick up a shifter, and a new seat I'm thinking. Anything else?

You may not need a new shifter. It may be only rusted cables. Simply replace the cables (buy them from any bike shop - brake cables are fatter than shifter cables so don't get them mixed up. If the cable housings are gunked up with rust, etc you may have to replace them too. Add lube (like Triflow) to the cable housings and replace the cables.
Ask any other questions in the Bicycle Mechanics forum. Lots of helpful folks there.

It looks like the rubber twist grip part is missing from the shifter

Yea, that's what I meant. The cables are fine, I can shift if I pull the cable hard with plyers or something. I didn't know what to call the grip thing.
