New to bike forum (Manhattan)

I am onto my 5th bike, the last 2 were purchased via the web; # 4 I had for only a year (stolen!). I learned a lesson: never leave an unlocked bike unattended no matter what anyone tells you. My active cycling started after my first 5-boro bike tour (5 years ago). I now ride the Hudson regularly, also Riverside Drive. Central Park used to be a favorite until those unruly bike-drawn rickshaw carriages arrived. They are driven by folks who just got off the boat: Take up all lanes, drive in curves sometimes unexpected U-turns against traffic. Sound familiar?

I am interested in bike mechanics, starting with learning how the gears work so I can maintain them. Suggestions? If I had a house, you'd probably see a bike repair garage. But I live in a studio so it is enough just having a bike.

The city is doing well adjusting to the growing bikers. . .but there is still room for improvement. For instance, corporations providing in-door garages. They want us to keep healthy (keep bennie costs down) so it should help them too.

I hope to find a few know-it-alls on this web about bike repair, bike legislation, bike parts.

Hi wisfjn, there are know-it-alls in every forum! But they're nice know-it-alls for the most part . Bicycle Mechanics for the repair, Advocacy & Safety for the legislation...and it depends on the parts you need.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !
