Cheap slacker

I am here to learn how to find a good cheap "mountain bike like" comuter bike for a short ride to work. I once fancied myslef a mountain biker. But pretty nuch just drove around with my Rockhopper on the rack of my Pathfinder. I gave the bike to friend a few years ago in exchange for a 36' TV.

I am bound and determined to find a reliable (yet stylish) commuter for a hundred fifty bucks or less.

The "real" bikers likely hate me.

Peace

RJ

Are there any hills on your commute route?
What kind of roads?
Will you be carrying anything on the bike - like panniers with clothes, laptop, lunch?
Will you be riding in the dark - night or early morning?

I'm more comfortable commuting on my road bike than on my mtn bike even though it has skinny, slick tires.

I'm sure others will disagree.
