Headset spacers

Hello all I have been lurking now for a couple of months and thought it time to pose a question. Does anyone know the answer to the question about what the minimum amount of spacer/s are needed above the headset? I have heard that 5mm at least, my LBS told me none is fine. Who really knows?

I am unable to download the entire file and cut and paste the appropriate part but I believe that the Trek Madone assembly guide also recomends a 5mm minimum. Why this is............I'm not sure, so take it with a grain of salt. You might get a better response from the mechanics forum.

By the way.....welcome to BF..

Ask over at the Bike Mechanics forum.
