Biking or pills

Hello all. Ron here with a little FYI. I have always been in to bicycling but never serious until about 8 years ago. My loving wife of 25 years was concerned with the pain I was haveing and scheduled me a wonderful stress test. My options from Doc were to get my act together or take a daily pill for the rest of my life. I chose the first option. We went on a stricter eating pland and I started riding more. Later after the second stress test (as if one wasn't bad enough) and clean bill of health from Doc, I was convenced that comutting was a way to extend my time here with my wife and kids.

My wife and I now live in Naples, FL where I work for a local bicycle shop. We have 3 stores and I commute to them, depending on which store I work at my commutes vary from (round trip) 16 to 60 miles a day. I try to talk everyone I meet into commutting. Funny the biggest excuse I hear is "there's no shower at work". I know some people have jobs that they have to dress up for but some of us are lucky enough not to have to worry about the fancy duds.

Well I have rambled on long enough. You will have to overlook the mistakes, I have never been one to visit forums little alone participate but I like to talk with other like minded folks.

See ya

Pills were one of my options, also.

I told the Doc that I'd rather exercise to see if that would control my cholesterol and weight.

Bicyclling has taken 30 pounds off me, so I'm hoping that the cholesterol is falling out also.

I'll find out in a couple months - when I have my annual physical.

Funny, two of my other problems have almost disappeared - constant back pain, and severe stiffness in my bad knee. The knee still hurts, but not so bad I can't stand it.

And, I haven't felt this good in almost 20 years, and I'm 62 now.

we were down in naples earlier this year (to say good-bye to my father-in-law, one of the original builders of marco island). sad time, ashes to sea.....
anyway, we saw major road changes/construction projects going on. are there strong bicycle advocate groups there, are they heard in planning/follow-through in road design? how is riding on tamiami trail? do you feel welcome on that road?
glad you stuck with plan A! Keep it Going, watch your diet, and keep spinning!
Welcome x2!!

I may need you to talk to my guy... his doctor just laid down the law, telling him he HAS to get his blood pressure and cholesterol down, or it's medication time. And since apparently the threat of one more pill outweighed two years of "no, seriously, you need to change your diet and get some exercise - here, I fixed your bike", he's (reluctantly, with a lot of grumbling) starting to look for some places to start.
