Introduction
Hello to all!
I'm new to joining any on-line forum for anything. So, this will be a new experience for me. I found out about this forum doing a Google search to learn about a bike that I bought last year at a thrift store--a Nishiki Riviera GT touring bike. Other than a banged up saddle and dry rotted tires, it was in great shape, and all components were there. Bought it for $20! Since I've become somewhat addicted to thrift shopping (it's a lot of fun), I'm always amazed at what I find at thrift stores that people donate. Often, the item is in excellent condition, as this bike was except for the small, easily fixed items mentioned. At any rate, the Google search led me to this bike forum. Learned a lot about this particular model and Nishiki bikes in general in this forum. I'm using the Nishiki as my daily commute bike--about 17 miles round-trip. Have Esge fenders installed on it so that the bike's good to go in poor weather even.
I also have a second bike which I purchased during the winter months on e-Bay 2 winters ago--a 1989 Trek 520. It needed some work, but structurally it was sound. I ended up restoring it so well that I decided to keep it for my weekend rides. Swapped out the Matrix rims for Mavic MA40s (great rims), and replaced the Shimano Uniglide cassette (which had pretty worn out teeth) with a Shimano Hyperglide (14-28T) cassette. What a difference! Having researched Trek bikes on that great website--vintage-Trek.com--I've found that models of this vintage and earlier were hand-built in Trek's Waterloo, WI, factory. This model was upgraded over 520 models in years past by using a Reynolds 531 chromoly frame. Very nice bike, which I've enjoyed riding in the Sacramento, California, area where I live.
I've been riding bikes since about 6 years old, so that's been about 53 years now. It's a great sport, and it will be fun to share photos of trips and technical information in this forum. I look forward to participating in the forum.
