Hope I'm doing the right thing

Hello all!

My last mountain bike was stollin about 10 years ago and I just said "....well I probably shouldnt say on here WHAT I said, suffice it to say after the family having 5 bikes ripped off over a 2 year period or so, I been sticking to driving. My wife and son still ride (and even lock their bikes up one in a while now)

I have mixed feelings about bicycles, my first one (in about '77) was a pretty little pink thing with basket and tassels.

Mom thought it was funny I'm sure, but as a 7 yo BOY I did not!

Then I found an abandend yellow 10 speed (my older brother had left it when he moved out) and tried and tried to get it working but couldnt figure out how to make it work.

I'm sure it needed tires and cabels but the chain was off and the shifter thingies were all screwed around, I would have been around 9 or so 1979.

I asked my dad for help (this is the same man who bought a new switch, wires, socket kit and plug for a floor lamp that ultimately just needed a new light bulb) for help.

All I remember is him chucking a few tools around the garage and saying something about single speed bikes and the good ol days. After probably 2 to 3 minutes he decided he couldnt fix it either.

I pushed it up and down the street and coasted a bit on it.

He DID take me to the local Western Auto store a few months later where he had had a brand new "Dirt Duster" on lay away for me!

First GOOD bike memory, for a week. Had a kid hassle me and hassle me to trade it to him for a camera, a caulculator and 10 dollars. I mean he was at my door every morning when I got up and he followed me around all day untill bed time untill I gave in.

Dad and mom were, how shall we say, "disapointed" at my actions, in fact today 29 years later if I mention "bicycle" around them they remind me of the new one I sold for 10 dollars a caulculator and a camera (which turned out to not work)

About 15 years ago I sold a old pickup and spent about $400 on a Raleigh mountain bike, awesome bike, however we were being kicked out of the place we had not been paying rent on for several months (kids do the damdist things) and I ended up selling it to get into another place.

Then a few years later with a job and wanting to get into shape (I have always been "big boned" as mother likes to call me, I bought a, a, I dont actually remember what it was now, I know it had "GT" in the name, another about $400 mountain bike anyway. Decent bike I liked my Raleghi better but still fun, for the few months I owned it. I pulled it of the porch one warm spring day to Get the Harley down for summer and I did not lock it up (my "something or another GT" and it was go in 60 seconds!

That was about 10 years ago and I just havent felt like messing with bikes again. Even when I use to ride people would shout to me "get a car" or "loser" or something, dont know why guess they thought I couldnt afford anything other than a bike.

And now that I'm 39 I'm afraid I will feel like a 12 yo again riding around.

Moving along, I stood on the scale the other day and watched in horror as it almost made one complete revolution!

Thats nearing 300 lbs on our scale which would be ok if I were 9 feet tall, I'm 6.

I get winded answering the phone, its time I do something.

A friend of mine was having a yardsale last weekend and in all his crap were several bikes, mostly walmart mountain bikes and a such but I did find two I thought I wanted.

The first is a Mongoose menace cruiser, looks like the bmx bikes my friends all had when I was growing up except this one fits me now, like a big bmx, needs tires and tubes he wanted $40 for it.

The next was a Raleigh Super Record 10 speed, also needs tires and tubes and tuned up, wanted $25 for it.

I ended up trading him a set of chevy valve covers for both of the bikes and here I am.

Mom and dad arent mad. I am my own landlord. Nobody is hassleing me to trade em for a broken camera,
but I am back to being a bit cofused as to how the gears are set up and such but it looks like this forum should be able to answer most of my questions.

The Mongoose I think I can handle, very basic, which I need as I have little bike mechanic experience.

After that one though I want to rebuild the Raleigh and I know that will be more of a challenge. Closest bike shop is probably 80 miles or so, only very basic stuff available here in town, but I may internet what I need anyhow.

Can someone tell me where to find the serial munber on the Raleigh so I can figure what year it is for parts and such? I have looked but dont see anything. All the Super Records I have googled look close to mine only difference is my shifters are on the lower part of the frame and not up by the handle bars.
My wheels look to have wheel weights on them too, did they actually balance bike wheels???

Also I have looked for tires online but still come up confused. My tires say 27"x1-1/4" They also say "fits K-2 English rims"

Thanks for your time and I will post pictures if anyone wants to see them.

Sammy

Do I have to have my photos on photo bucket or something like that in order to post them here?

Thanks,

Sammy
