Biking from Coast to Coast
Hi -
I'm considering biking from the Atlantic to the Pacific starting in January, 2010. My wife will be my support. Naturally, we would be taking a southern route.
We are open and are looking for suggestions and recommendations. I am new to biking long distances.
Thanks.

I harbor a Dream to cycle the perimeter of the US with support by my wife driving a luxury RV after we win the lottery. Just this morning I was thinking about the Dream. I had planned to ride clockwise out of Boston, but many posters have suggested it is much better to ride the Pacific coast from North to South rather than the other way, so I was mentally planning my new route and schedule. That's the kind of information you can expect to find, from the broad route outline to detailed suggestions, for example what kind of tent.
For my interest, what kind of vehicle are you taking, what are your plans for accomodations, and where are you starting from?

I am a real newbie to long distance biking.
Here's some basic information:
1. I need to decide on the best bike for this kind of trip. I am a little worried about the "butt". What's the best seat?
2. I am planning to leave from Mytle Beach,SC and ride to Santa Monica starting January, 2010. We would like to take Route 66 starting in Oklahoma.
3. Right now, we are planning on a fifth-wheel RV which we will need to buy.
4. My thoughts are that I will bike 50 miles a day and my wife will drive a 100 miles a day. We plan to stay at each campsite 2 nights. Day 1: I bike 50 miles from campsite #1. My wife drives from campsite #1 50 miles to pick me up and we return to campsite #1. Day 2: We both drive to were I stopped on Day 1. Then I bike 50 miles to campsite #2 and my wife drives to campsite #2. Then we keep repeating this schedule.
As you can see nothing is finalized. We need to figure out how to find campsites, what is the proper clothing, and many other things.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my message.
Your dream trip sounds exciting!

I haven't shopped for a bike in years so I can't help there. Regarding saddles, I recently bookmarked this thread for myself: "Saddle Sores; Cleanliness and Other Approaches"
https://www.bikeforums.net/touring/545515-saddle-sores-cleanliness-other-approaches.html
This thread is more about treating and preventing the worst problems, but in general you have to ride miles in a saddle to HTFU, as they say on BF ("Harden the Flesh Up"). In particular post #6 by Machka has a nice description about fitting a saddle.
I'll look forward to further posts and correspondences about your trip and preparations.
