Hi, I signed up yesterday after lurking for a few weeks. My girlfriend and I live in Minneapolis (MN), and are debating the merits of an extended tandem tour next summer. The debate centers largely on whether or not we get a tandem or ride solos. I think we're going to get a 2 seater soon, but have to decide between used & unseen vs. new, expensive & warranty.

As bikers, we have a collection. She's been commuting by bike for a couple years & has a good collection ranging from a '69 Schwinn one-speed to modern road & mtn bikes. Plus a 3 wheeler she pulled out of the dumpster that needs a few parts. I've been a long time biker, but not as much lately; I gave up mtn biking when I got a dog & haven't committed to commuting to work. So I only have 2 bikes (road & mtn).

Prolly gonna hang around the tandem, touring & mechanics forums. Thanks to those that have already responded.

I miss snow...

Is there not snow on Mauna Loa?

I work on Mauna Kea, but yes there can be snow on both at times. (Despite being a long-time northerner, Hawaii is the only state where I've ever had to put chains on my tires) However, it isn't "winter" - it's just some snow on top of a BIG rock. it would be more accurate to say that I miss "winter". Winter in MN has a nice quiet/still feeling about it. I used to spend lots of time walking in the snowy woods at night, sometimes under the moonlight, when the temp was below 10 degrees and the snow has that squeaky styrofoam sound underfoot. Sometimes with snow falling all around, or sometimes patiently looking for the aurora. So very quiet and lonely - just you and the trees and stars and the crispy air.

You aren't going to do too much quality biking around White Bear Lake MN in the middle of winter, though. :)
