Hello from NE Wisconsin
Thought I would drop in and say hi. Recently found this place while doing reasearch for a road bike. Been doing a lot of reading here since!
I am 34 and picked up moutain biking last season from a co-worker. I have had my Fisher Marlin for years but didn't do much more than road/trail ride with it until I went with Luke for true "trail riding", I was hooked after that first time!
About two years ago I thought about a road bike, even took one out for a spin but didn't follow through. I am now getting one, just need to figure out which one! I will be riding for fitness, and doing some commuting as well. I do have to drive about 35-45min for any mountain biking trial so I think the road bike will get used a lot since I cannot always spend the extra time needed to load up and drive to the trail.
I do have some questions on the bikes I am considering, but I will make a seperate post about those later. Looking forward to learning a lot from everyone.

Well since you asked I am looking at the following so far:
Trek 2.3
Gary Fisher Ion or the Ion Pro (found on sale last week for $1740)
Scott S20
Jamis Ventura Elite
Blue RD1
I may look at a Caad9 based on some of the stuff I read here, but I think thats going to be to much of a "race" bike for me.
This will be my first road bike. I do plan for a late august race with a friend, but its more of a "gonna do it to say I did it" type of a thing than a serious thing.
I am looking for full 105 or nearly full 105.
I want to be around $1500 retail. Less is better, slightly more if its a "have to have" for some reason.
I am looking for something that is going to be fast, but that I can work up to riding for an extended time. Im 34 and im in good physical condition. Could loose about 8 pounds, but other than that no issues. Between riding for health, fun, and commuting I plan on putting on about 125-175mi a week for now. My commute will be 21miles round trip and is mostly country two lane roads, fyi.
Let me know if you would suggest anything else, or any issues you see with the bikes I listed. My goal is to do it right and get a quality bike the first time.

I plan to take the bike path once I get my road bike and get it dialed in. Ride from Sheboygan to Greenbush.......my parents live in the Elkhart Lake area.
I rode in the Sheboygan Quarry for my first trail ride, that was a blast. Have not tried the Wigwam course? Want to get down to KMSF this summer, didn't pan out last year. I got into the mountain biking thing late in the season. You are right, nice trails! Ever ridden any of the trails (mountain bike) in Green Bay area?

No, was going to watch the final in Sheboygan last fall but had a conflict. I did hit Baird Creek once, and stump farm several times. Was planning on doing the 24hours of 9mile this year but my friend informed me it was eliminated for this year.
