Newbie - Tandem
Hi folks
Ran across this forum a couple of days ago and thought you folks may be helpful in sending me on my way. I used to bike alot in my college days in the 60s but now just once in a while. Finally, I made up my mind that I want to make this my main source of cardiovascular exercise. There has alway been a problem with my wife and I riding at different speeds and not talking much as we enjoy the ride. So we have decided to get a Tandem bike..... and that is what I am hoping to find in this forum. That is, what to look for in purchasing a Tandem, experiences of other Tandem riders (good and bad), so I hope that there are some riders out there who can point me in the right direction.
I live in Stockton, California so riding at all times of the year is a possibility.

Welcome to the forum. My wife and I have been riding single bikes since July 2003. We bought a Trek T900 tandem in Nov of 2003. Our riding is pretty much short trips of under 20 miles. We try to take it out at least once a week. We are noticing lately that we are riding more as a team, she said she knows when the shifts are coming just by feel instead of my calling them out. I think our distance limitation might be because of the upright style of the bike. We have recently gone to recumbent single bikes and are now considering a recumbent tandem. We had to laugh tonight on our ride. Some people in the neighborhood asked us just how many bikes do we have anyway. 5 so far. Good luck in your search for the right tandem. I'm sure others here will have good advice for you. Dale

I second the vote for the recumbent! I just recently went 'bent and it was definately worth it. RANS and others make some awesome tandems.

Take a look at the tandems built buy Burely, Trek, cannondale and KHS all good bikes that will give you years of service. These bikes are in the $1500 to $2500 price range, if you want to spend less try looking into a used tandem.
Most of the recumbent tandems start around $3500 to $4000 and go up from there. Sun offeres the EZ tandem for around $1800.
How you plan on using the bike should point you to the bike that will serve you best.
