I'm slower than Tom Skeritt's parakeet and i smell like a yak

It doesn't look like this forum gets a lot of attention but I feel compelled to post something here. OK, I actually got a very courteous email from the admin begging me to tell the entire community about myself and my lack of fitness. I'll keep it brief.

32 years old, SSgt in the Air Force, smoked for 17 years, quit on 4/20/2010, bought a Scattante '10 CFR race (italian for "poop-cycle", not to be confused with "poop-sicle") a week later, riding a 100K this weekend

I seem to be regaining my aerobic ability rather quickly but I know the gains will be fast initially and then taper off. I'm riding about 100-130 miles a week right now and would like to do more but time is a factor as I'm a full time electrical engineering student. My rides are typically between 30 and 40 miles, take between 2:00:00 and 2:25:00 on moderately hilly terrain and I average about 175-180 bpm on my polar. Pretty basic stuff for right now.

In typical nerd fashion I have armed myself with an arsenal of books on the subject of cycling and I'm eager to get my basic conditioning up to where I can start testing myself, tracking some metrics and upping the quality and intensity of my miles.

Fantastic post! Welcome & great to see your commitment to health. One thing I will say; don't forget that riding is also just plain FUN!! I commute to work (9 miles one way) and it is so easy for me to push myself for a better time or to pass the rider ahead of me. But when I sit back, enjoy the ride and recognize the awesome physical benefits I'm reaping... I enjoy myself so much more. Sure, I enjoy tracking my progress; and striving for better performance can be wonderfully rewarding. I just have to ballance it a bit or I loose the "fun" aspect of the ride and it becomes all about the numbers. This is only my experience so take it for what its worth.

In any case, great job & keep up the great work (play?).
