Greetings from Silicon Valley

I'm a technology writer, middle-aged. I was a long distance runner and bicycle commuter in my youth, but that all fell by the wayside. Marriage and kids (two daughters, one now at UCLA) will do that.

Now I'm returning to both running and cycling. I've dropped 35lbs in the past year. Yesterday, I rode 30km on my six year old Giant OCR3. It's much easier riding at my current weight!

However, I'm looking at shifting from the Giant -- a pure road / sport bike -- to more of a touring geometry. My fondest memories of cycling was riding on an English made (not Raleigh or Dawes; can't remember the brand) bike built from Reynolds 531. I'd like a little more forgiving ride than the short wheelbase, aluminum framed Giant gives me now.
