College student getting into biking from Shreveport, LA

Hey all!

As my title says, I'm a college student from Shreveport, LA. Last fall, I began riding again...on my old Walmart bike, a Schwinn Sidewinder (technically a mountain bike, although that's a bit of a stretch) from the '90s which I'd ridden as a teenager. After a few months on the bike, I realized cycling was something I really wanted to get into. My bike, on the other hand, didn't really support this decision. As a teen, I'd wrecked the bike a few times, and the bike had been stored outside for years without being ridden or maintained. It wasn't pretty...and a visit to the local bike shop revealed around $100 worth of maintenance to get the bike back in decent shape. Considering I'd only paid around $150 for the bike brand new, it didn't seem worth it.

So, long story short, thanks to some help from my parents, I ended up buying my new bike: Trek mountain hardtail- a 2010 3700 3 series, a few days later. I LOVE this bike! I've put a little over 240 miles on the bike this sumer, and hope to find the time to keep riding regularly even now that classes are resuming. For now, I ride mostly the local bike trails as well as some mountain bike trails/parks in the area.

I'm hoping to learn more about maintenance and building stamina, as I'd love to start doing some rallies and such. Also would love to hear from anyone in the Shreveport area as far as bike clubs or events nearby. And it's always fun to read about road bikes, as I'd LOVE to get one in the near future.
