Hullo from NYC

Hi I'm a college student, moved from suburbia (Queens) to the city (woot!). I'm a beginner cyclist so please be kind about any stupid questions I will have. Thanks and have a happy Labor Day. Peace.

At the moment I'm bikeless. I briefly had possession of a crappy Free Spirit bike I got from a garage sale but I sold it. I'm in the process of buying a Dahon Espresso from craigslist.

Um, to give you an idea of how much of a beginner I am to any type of cycling at all, I never got the hang of riding on two-wheels when I was little and it was only last year on spring break that my friends got me on a rental bike - single gear, coaster- and hand-brakes, big fat tires - and I rode a bike for real. Since then I've been on a bike for a couple more times but only for short periods of time as the FS bike didn't really fit me and it was very uncomfortable.
Once I have the Espresso, or really any bike that will fit me and in my dorm room, I'm going to practice biking on the various bike paths around the city.

Welcome, and don't feel bad. I'm just getting on a bike again after more than thirty years. I didn't actually ride one until I was nineteen, one summer at a friend's house in Westchester. I'm also looking at folders, but ones with 20" wheels. It's kinda bewildering. I've gotten a lot of good advice from folks in the folding section here. Give a look there if you have any questions.
Best of luck.

Thanks 10 Wheels and cliffdweller.

It was because I was looking for a folder and lurked around the folding section for a while that I joined. I originally wanted a 20" folder too but no one was selling a decent dahon on craigslist or ebay within my budget. There was someone selling a Dahon Helios P8 extremely cheaply but someone beat me to it. I think the Espresso will be a good compromise and its full-sized-ness will let me get used to riding and balancing first before I get on a smaller-wheeled bike, which I think would be a little more difficult for me to handle given my inexperience.

I think it might be relative. You'll probably get comfortable pretty quickly on whatever you decide to get.
