Bike Forums - capacity of campagnolo nouvo record rear derailleur

there was a thread on this site about the capacity of the campagnolo rear derailleur. there seems to be a lot of misinformation about this. the nouvo record rear derailleur & i believe the super record is the same geometry with different graphics & some titanium bits. this has not been made for probably 20 years now but they are so durable that there are probably tens of thousands out there. this by no means a wide range derailleur but there are a few good gear trains that work. many sites state that the capacity of this derailleur is 28 teeth, that is not true. both sloanes & delongs books said 30 teeth, & this works with campagnolo horizontal dropouts. use a 13-14-17-21 -26 -30 cluster & 5 teeth between the chainrings, anything from 38-43 to 47-52. if your chainrings are 42-52 a 14 -15-17-19 -21-24-28. shimano made this a stock freewheel cluster but with a 13 instead of the 14. harris cyclery lists the 13 -28 as a stock 7 speed cassette on their website. i have a bike with a wider range rear derailleur on one of my bikes & i am using a 41-46 & 13-14-17-21-27-34 and it is fine, you just coast down the hills. i set up the 42-52 for one of my clients so i had a chance to try it out. and barry likes his bike nottingham built raleigh international, he was trying to save as much of the original parts as possible. by this time campagnolo repostioned there cage pivot to work with 10 tooth chainring differences, but the derailleur is still happier with a half step.
