Hello from South Central Illinois!
I am your typical middle aged fat white guy who " used to ride allott" ..." back in the day....
I am now trying to make up for treating my body like a garbage dump for the last 20 years so I can keep up with my 7 yr old. I really do enjoy riding and eventually I willl get back into touring as that is what I really enjoy.
I welcome any and all advise on cycling and touring as well as how to lose 20 years of garbage from around my waist !
Happy riding!

Ride lots. Eat less.
Have fun with it.
Ask for help when you have a problem.

Hello Scottrod. From Alan and Barbara, tandem cyclists living by Liverpool, England.
This advice comes from the heart, I also let myself go years ago, but took-up cycling again and got back into shape.
I was a mechanic for 35 years, then retrained as a cycle coach and personal trainer after I had got my life back.
Buy the book EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE, by Dr Peter J D'Adamo if you know your blood group type and show the book to your MD.
Perhaps you live close to the KT cycle trail, (Kansas to St. Louis) a great place to enjoy walking and cycling ?
We cycled many miles from Vancouver, BC and used the KT trail on route to my sister's house in Greenville, SC.
When loosing body fat through exercise and your new eating plan, use the Tape Measure, Not the Scales.
You sound like you have taken the first step to a rewarding life. Keep intouch, Alan.

Alan & Barbara:
Thanks for the nice words and introduction. Yes I do live pretty close to the KATY Trail and riding it is one of my goals within the next 12 months. We are blessed in this area with allot of "Rail to Trails" in Missouri and in Illinois. As I live in the country I have limitless paved trails, also known as small country roads with minimal traffic and some nice scenery. I will look up the book you recommend this weekend, I appreciate any and all advise.
Thanks again and happy riding!
