Newb from chicagoland

Hi everybody,

Relatively new to the biking world. Been riding the past couple of years witha good friend of mine. Originally bought a Kona Dew FS not realizing how much enjoyment I'd get out of cycling out in the farm areas west of Chicago. I've met a lot of really cool people, really easy going and approachable people cycling and love it. I'm coming off a second 1000 mile year and have been looking for a strong sturdy steel frame road/touring bike for the past couple months. Like some other posters, the more I research, the more I learn and the more interested I become.
Team Ogre is our team name( my buddy and I) that's more of a running joke now. We are both big guys I'm roughly 6'2" 300 lbs and he's 6'9" and a little lighter so we tend to stick out like oddiities while riding with our by other groups. Haha.
I stumbled upon this forum the other day and decided to join. So hello and look forward to learning more about the wonderful world of biking through everyone here!

Oh, and happy thanksgiving!

Welcome and happy holidays. There's a wealth of info on this site for any type of cycling in which you may become interested. From your self-description you could be team Bert 'n Ernie. Take a look at the Commuting and Utility forums to maximize your cycling experience. It'll increase your mileage and expand your perspective on the use of the bicycle as transportation.

My cycling is primarily of the commuting, utility and fixed gear variety in a rural enviornment. Started cycle-commuting years ago in Chicago's NW side long before bike lanes, 3 ft. rule, etc. There's always a special place in my heart for all things Chicago. Anyway, welcome once again and here's hoping your cycling is a lifetime pursuit.

Welcome from the far south 'burbs. I love riding out in the Great Corn Ocean, too.

If you're looking at good steel touring bikes, here are a couple to consider. They have served my wife and I very well:

Her Jamis Aurora

and my Surly LHT

Welcome Team Ogre!

You will find many like-minded cyclists here at Bikeforums. I too was a larger newb three years ago when I began participating here and now I'm enjoying all the benefits of an active cycling & fitness addiction. You will find a number of us from Chicago. Each of the sub-forums has its own focus.

The Clydesdale/Athena forum is a great place to get tips if your a bigger guy. Many of us are active cyclists who just happen to be above 200 lbs. See the 500 mile a month thread and you will find some very committed cyclist at the Clydesdale/Athena forum.

I enjoy Century rides, riding for fitness and the occasional faster pace-line ride. I also hang out with the vintage bike crowd that is very active in the Chicago area.

If you ever want to enjoy the cycling between Chicago and the Wisconsin border, just PM me!

All - I am extremely rude... I apologize. I signed up for this forum...asked my questions and just kept on with everything else that was going on!

I did end up purchasing a bike just before Christmas. I found a almost brand new 1986 Schwinn Prelude! It is purty! The only major changes I had/wanted to make on it were obviously, put my pedals on and get some more stout wheels to roll on. My good friend and riding buddy told me about this bike shop in Madison, WI that built his Custom Waterford called Yellow Jersey. The wheels they built him were pretty much bombproof. I ended up having them make me wheels as well...I got Velocity Chukker rims with Phil Wood 48H hubs. I rode for the second time today and absolutely love this bike.

Thank you for suggestions. After buying my Kona brand new, I couldn't afford another brand new bike. I did look into purchasing a new bike, but scoured Craigslist and found what I was looking for! I did meet a guy selling his Paramount, great shape, impeccable really. But the frame was way too small for me.

So here's what I've got now. My (awesome) girlfriend bought me a Brooks B17 for my birthday and I absolutely love it!

Thanks all...And if you ever want to ride with me, PM me...I'm always looking for new members to Team Ogre..haha

Be safe!
