I've been reading the forums for some time now and figured I might as well start posting.

I am a year-round bicycle commuter with a 10 mile round trip. My commute is mostly road with 100 yds of sidewalk. I have been doing this for three years now. I finally got a bad knee repaired and traded the cane for a bike.

I use several bikes, none of which are worth much money:

'63 (I think) Schwinn Sierra as a rain and winter bike.
'90s Diamondback Centurion for fair weather riding.
Giant Cypress with low gearing and big studded tires for deep snow and icy ruts.
Specialized hybrid with xtracycle for hauling large loads.

I commute in all weather and really enjoy severe weather challenges. Smooth ice is great and hailstorms are particularly cool.

I encourage bicycle commuting among my employees, and consequently spend a lot of time helping them repair their bikes.

It's no problem with studded tires or tire chains. In fact it makes for a very fast ride. One does have to slow down quite a bit for the corners. Broken up and rutted ice is the real challenge.
