Hello from Philadelphia

Hello, My name is Ted and I am from just outside Philly.

I got back into cycling last year and found it to be just wonderful. It was a great work-stress reliever and I lost some weight.

I really do not know much about the nuts and bolts of cycling, so I plan to lurk and learn.

Ted

Hello back from Lancaster and BF!

Cycling is a great stress reliever for me as well.

There is also a NorthEast section of the forums to check out.

Welcome to the forums Ted! What kind of riding do you enjoy?

HigherGround,

Right now I am a very casual cyclist. I go out after work and ride around my neighborhood. I am still getting used to riding in traffic so I tend to ride during the day when people are at work. I worked out a couple of different paths that are on side streets and keep me out of trouble. In the summer I took to riding longer trips on the weekends. My favorite trip was to go around the Phila airport, out to Essington, around some of the Heinz preserve, and home again.

My spring project includes a rack for my car so I can go back out to parks and so on. Ideally I would simply love to ride from to VF from my home, and that is my goal for the spring/summer.

When the weather gets a bit better I am going to try bike commuting. I know that is a bit of a fair weather cycling, but so be it.

I have an old Giant Rincon Mountain bike that I turned into more of a touring bike, and I have a hybrid. I'm a big guy so the hybrid's 700C wheels does not like my weight all that well, but the Giant (after having my LBS make me a new rear wheel) works well for me.

I have some hopes for some long trips for the summer but am taking things one step at a time.

Ted.... hello from a fellow philadelphian and bikeforums member. i wish you well in building confidence for city riding. it took me a couple years to get the hang of it, and I recommend you keep on taking advantage of side streets if that works for you. the bike lanes are another option for low-stress travel on city streets... and if you're traveling near broad street, consiider 15th or 16th as an alternative

Roger that on 15th and 16th. My job has me driving all over Philadelphia and I am impressed and astounded at those who ride up and down broad street. I guess it is faster than taking the side streets but it seems a pretty hairy way to go.

I have ridden the bike lanes in S.W. Philly. It is a nice way to go.
