Hello from Stanford, CA

I am a new grad student at Stanford and am interested in getting into cycling. I ran in college but have a nice road bike and feel guilty for not using it more, especially considering I'm in one of the best cycling areas in the world. I'm familiar with running where it takes about 70-100 miles/week to be putting in enough work to be competitive with the best guys. What is the equivalent mileage/time on the bike needed for cycling?

If you can get in 10-15 hours a week that's very good for an amateur. If you want to race you should learn pack riding skills, bike handling skills, how to descend, corner, etc. There is more to bike racing then going fast or how many hours you put in on the bike. Joining a club and taking a skills clinic will help you in this respect. Here is a list of current clubs in our district:
