this is my first post at this forum, so let me say hello. hello.

i've riden bmx casually for several years, but in the past few weeks i have wanted to get a bicycle a little more practical as far as transportation and carrying a slight load. i've been to a great local bike store that builds bikes from used parts and such, but i don't know much really about my new endeavors. maybe someone can offer advice?

i've recently moved a little farther from my university's campus (a couple miles), and it's slightly hilly, so riding my fixed gear, bmx bike back and forth gets old real quick.

what do i want from a new bike? i would like something i can make this commute with, but also for long-ish trips. i like the idea of travelling to slightly far away cities on my bike--or perhaps an occasional camping trip with all belongings in a backpack and a small load on the frame. i also like the idea of being able to get aerodynamic and move quickly, though i know lighter means more money. i vaquely understand the differences between the various styles--e.g. racing, touring, road bikes--but i think i want something that is a sort of hybrid between touring and road. any ideas?

thanks in advance. this site seems to be a great resource for people, and i hope it comes to be for me as well.

Welcome to the forums! Concerning your upcoming choices in bike styles, read on, there are many many threads that cover just about every riding style known. The search option goes a great distance in finding it all here. When I commuted, I did so on my Aegis Aro Svelte, it is considered a racing bike. I think the majority of commuters probably do so on less radical rides, but a poll has probably been taken on just such a question.
