Bike Forums - Howdy from the Texas Hill Country

I have not ridden a bicycle in many years so it is kind of curious that I would end up here on this forum. It all started when my wife decided that she wanted to start riding a bicycle to work (just over a mile from the house). That did not seem to be that bad of an idea to me so I encouraged her. She ended up bringing home a 1963 Sears bike (a girls "Flightliner" I think).

Her "new" bicycle needed a lot of work, in fact it needed just about everything. Being a tool collector of sorts who dabbles with metal fabrication I decided the first order of business would be to build a repair stand. I decided after my 60 th birthday that I really only enjoyed working on anything for any length of time if the work fell somewhere between waist high and shoulder high. So a web search for "homemade bicycle repair stand" brought me repeatedly to this site. I ended up registering so I could see the pictures of the diy work stands here.

I ended up building a stand based on several of those pictured here but identical to none of them. Her bicycle is completed now and I have yet to decide what I want to ride. I'm leaning toward a cruiser to substitute/augment the daily walks that my doctor recommend for me. Back in 1959 I sold a one eyed mare (she had just weaned a healthy colt) for $50 and turned around and spent $43(?) of that on a brand spanking new bright red Schwinn. The last bicycle that I owned was a brand new 1973 10 speed Fuji, which I picked up at the base exchange at Tachikawa Air Force Base in 1973. I rode that one often until I left Japn in late '76 and have not owned a bike since.

I have found a renewed interest in bicycling through this experience and plan to come up with something to ride soon.
