New Guy from Washington, DC
Hey all-
Quick synopsis of my bicycling history to get things going: I just turned 25 yesterday, and have been cycling for about a year now. Last summer I moved to downtown Washington, DC from the suburbs on the Chesapeake Bay, and decided that I was going to change my lifestyle entirely. After working an extremely high stress job (65-70 hours/week) for two years, I had let eating carryout, sitting at my desk all day, high stress (which I blame my previous smoking habit for) get the better of me (not to mention that I had my knee completely reconstructed after a catastrophic rugby incident in college). Anyway, point being, I got this new job that actually allows me to have a work life balance. I started eating healthy, quit smoking cold turkey, and bought a Trek 7.1FX and started commuting by bike as much as I could (about 6 miles each way).
I am 5'10". Since starting cycling I have gone from 227 lbs to 180 lbs. I went from only being able to commute by bike two or three times a week to doing about 120-150 miles a week, every week. I now have my dad's old '83 Univega and a new Felt Z85 I just bought (truth be told the vega is more fun to ride...). I just did my first metric century (Tour de Cure - on the vega) and am training for my first full century later this summer.
Even though I've only been at it for a short while, I'm extremely passionate about bicycling. I really do believe it changed (and possibly to some extent saved) my life. I've been lurking on these forums since I first got my 7.1 FX and they have helped me tremendously. For this reason I decided that it might be time to contribute what I can to the next new guy, so I figured I'd sign up.
Anway, enough rambling about myself. Thanks to the community for all the knowledge you've imparted to me already.
R,
Rob
Oh, and here's some links to my bikes (b/c who isn't proud of their wheels?):
