Reno, Nevada, USA
I just bought my first bike last month and am preparing to go touring the back roads of Nevada and also in Death valley in California this coming fall and winter (mostly dirt four-wheel-drive roads). Below is a picture of the bike after I attached the rear rack. There are two 6 liter Dromedaries on the sides of the rack and a backpack on top. I have since added a small handlebar bag for my smartphone and books and maps, plus a bottle holder on the down tube and a coiled bike lock around the seat post. That should complete my setup. I have done extensive backpacking, so I have plenty of confidence in my camping gear, but this is the first time I have owned a bike since I was growing up, over 30 years ago, and all of my bikes then were single-speed, so I have much to learn. I also don't know much about the water availability in Nevada, which is why I am planning on carrying 13 liters as my standard capacity, plus another 6 liter bladder inside the backpack in case I want to up that to 19 liters.
