handmade steel Greg Lemond owner in Seattle
Hi, my name is Heather and I'm from the Seattle area. I have been riding road bikes for about 10 years, since I joined my college triathlon and cycling teams. I've been mostly road touring and bike commuting since then.
My main motivation for joining your forum is because I have a handmade steel Greg Lemond bicycle that I am interested in 1) identifying and 2) eventually selling. I bought this bike used at the Denver VeloSwap in 2002 as my first road bike. Alas, the frame is too big for me (I'm 5'10") and I recently purchased a much better fitting bicycle now that I am finally done with grad school and have a real job. However, my old Greg Lemond always seems to garner attention from knowledgeable cyclists, and the mechanics at my local bike shop (Greggs Cycles) always seem to go starry-eyed when I bring this bike into the shop for a tune-up. I will post a proper thread with all the pics in the vintage bikes forum, but here's an overview picture of the bike to get the mental juices flowing (bike seat is just an old one that I slapped on temporarily). Thanks in advance for your help! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P...0/IMG_4730.JPG |
Welcome Heather.
Awesome looking bike. :thumb: I know you're sad it doesn't quite fit. :( What bike did you get that fits? Got pics? |
The Lemond has a 56 cm (C-C) seat post length, and I have never been able to reach far enough to reach the hoods comfortably. My new setup is a 54cm with a 5cm shorter seat-to-handlebar reach. I wanted a bike with which I could commute daily to work on and handle road touring, so I chose a 54cm Specialized TriCross Elite Disc (a cyclocross bike). Am loving it! It has a much less aggressive fit, so I can ride it comfortably to/from work (and the disc brakes are awesome here in rainy Seattle) and on longer weekend rides. And I can still stay up with my bf's fancy titanium Litespeed road bike on weekend rides. I'm hoping I can save up to invest in a true road bike in the next year or so, but my new bike has made me pretty happy! I don't have a pic loaded on my computer, but here's a link to the Specialized Tricross official page with a picture of my bike model.

Welcome to BF. Love the look of that ride.

Have you considered getting a smaller stem? Since, you're 5'10 and the bike looks like a 58 cm bike, you aught to fit it. What's the standover like for you? A smaller stem could help with the reach of those drop bars.
I say this because I am the same height as you and recently purchased a smaller stem for my nishiki, 58cm framed bike. Anyway, nice bike! Keep it if you can!! |
I've got <2 inches of clearance height over the top bar. I have thought briefly about a smaller stem. My new bike is a 54cm and the seat-to-handlebar length is 5cm shorter than on my Lemond. (I've been riding the lemond with the seat -- not shown in picture -- pushed as far forward as I possibly can). But I'm pretty sure I am going to sell it -- I may not be a bike guru/expert, but I do want to see the Lemond go to an appreciative owner! I've got an interested purchaser coming over to take a look at the bike tonight.

What's a new stem gonna cost you but $20.00 at most! I would be heart broken and had such a bike and sold it; you might regret it! But maybe you need the cash and storing it is a big problem... I rid myself of two bikes once and have regretted it ever since. |
