Newbie from Wisconsin

Hi everyone new member here from Milwaukee. I just got into cycling, started out as needing a basic bike to be able to go on a 15 mile ride with a bunch of friends from a
campout to a brewery. So I bought a $10 craigslist Schwinn, and being the engineering tinkerer I am basically dis-assembled the whole thing and rebuilt it with a new wheelset as a single speed. Fast forward a few months and I've found myself riding 3-4 times a week rather than going to the gym. Taking a little inspiriation from my wife who just finished her first half marathon I decided to start taking riding a little more seriously and train up to a half century. In looking for advice I found bike forums, I've already found a lot of help on here and hopefully I'll be able to give back in my own turn as I hopefully get to that first half! Any of you riding around the Milwaukee area with advice on routes and/or groups to ride with would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Mrclean,

$10 bikes are fun.
I started like you on a $15 bike. Rode it 1500 miles, got in shape and bought a new one.

Looking forward to hearing about your first 50 mile ride.

Hi and welcome
I started out on a cheap mountain bike and up graded from there. The wife and I ride the Ozaukee Interurban Trail allot.
It's 50mi round trip for me to ride to Port Washington for lunch.
Here a link for some trails

Welcome from the Grafton area! The Oak Leaf and Ozaukee Interurban trails are great, although they can be heavily populated on weekends. A good ride to train for is the Trek 100 in June. It's one of the best supported rides I have done, and by far my favorite organized ride. You'll probably find organized rides have a Metric century (~ 62 miles) rather than a half century, but if you can do 50 miles, you can do 62.

Welcome to the addiction!
