New (really old) From AZ
Greetings. Old roadie here who started racing in Arizona in the mid to late '70s and quit sometime in the mid to late '90s. After a LONG time out of the saddle my bro-in-law just gave me a basket case 1983 Nishiki International. I'm looking to source some decent period parts to get it back on the road and get rid of my beer tumor. Of course, the last time I "came back" in the early 90s, I started out with a cheap Benotto equiped with Shimano 105 and ended up with a custom Serotta with a new Record gruppo. Maybe I should just throw my wallet out the window of my car on the way home tonight...

After tearing down the International last night I got a better picture of why it was a gift. I had to cut the chain off and pretty much everything that could sun-rot, or just plain rot, had done so. I was lucky that, other than the chain and free wheel, nothing was really rusted. Lots of oxidation on the Alu parts so I don't know how many I'll be able to save. The brakes and bars HAVE to go, for fit and safety reasons.
It actually had a kickstand on it. I'm going to have to find a co-op here in the Phoenix area, as my tools were stolen about 12 years ago.

I bought mine used. It had the original tires on it.
They were dry rotted and lasted 2 weeks of very slow riding.
I bought 2 @ $10 tires and spent 4 hours cleaning the bike, then took the above pic.
I was 65 y/o when I bought it from a guy who was 60 y/o that said he was too old to ride a bike anylonger.
Have fun with your project.

What part of the area are you in? It sounds like there's many different cycling groups all over town. Plus it is pretty easy to find 1-2 people if you just want a small group.
I posted some info in the SW Regional forum last night, and I'm sure there's even more events coming up, since this is prime riding season here, until May or June at least.
Welcome!
