Spin Baby Spin

Hello, pleased to "meet" you all and hope I see you out there on a bike somewhere!

It was a mixture of guilt and resurrected joy the other day when I finally got my old Schwinn 564 out of the attic a few weeks ago. Dusted it off, took it to the LBS (learned that acronym on this forum!) and had a full overhaul. Haven't ridden it in 15, no 16, gee golly whiz, something like 18 years now. But I've got history on that bike.

I was a mountain bike racer in my college days. Loved tearing through the trees, crazy descents, big ringing on singletrack all that stuff back when I was invincible. Bought the 564 off a used bike rack one day to be my trainer. Discovered this road bike thing is kind of fun! It wasn't too long before I was putting way more miles on the road bike than the mountain bike. In fact, after a big ring wreck (tree came out of nowhere, tree won), the remains of the mountain bike got sold for an Ultegra chainring for the road bike (because I thought it looked pretty, kind of like art) and I retired from speed.

I thought. Do you know I broke the "sound barrier" on that crazy 564? Road bikes scoot, let me tell you. Over 50 mph last time I looked down at the computer that day. Don't know how fast I got up to because at that speed, I was too scared to look down again. Let's just say I was spun out, coming down a looooooooong hill in Winston-Salem NC, and back then I could handle 115 rpms or so.

Those were the days. The things you see at 18-25 mph in the saddle that you'll miss boxed up in a car! The sights! The sounds! The smells! Well, the smells aren't always so good - car exhaust! I do believe I did see it all on Mulberry St, from the saddle of my trusty 564, not down in the drops, just cruising along and taking it all in. I could never sell that bike. Not worth much to anyone but me. Not even worth much to me anymore as I'm not so comfortable on it these days. Looking to buy something a little easier on the butt and the gut but I'll keep my 564 monument and take it out for a spin around the neighborhood from time to time. And I'm going to buy a nice, sensible commuter with fenders and a bell! Yeah man, and one of those antennas with a flag and be cool like only two wheelin' folks can understand. Maybe not the flag. Unless I can get a Jolly Roger.

I'm glad to finally put the job in its place, finally have my priorities straight, finally get back in the saddle. Hello to you all and I hope to see you out there on some beautiful road. Think I'll head on over to the advice section of the forum, see if I can get someone to tell me the difference between these bikes with all this crazy technology they have these days. Disc brakes on road bikes?
