Sirrus Dog checks in.......
Hello, it's been awhile since I posted anything, so here is what I've done since last year.
1. Bought a Fuji roubaix 2.0. Took the crappy alex- A class rims off, and put mavic open pros on laced to dura ace hubs, with double butted spokes. I then took off the very inadequet shimano 9 speed hyperglide, and went with a ultegra 9 speed multi range cassette. Expensive but well worth it when you finish a 23 mile ride at the hottest time of the year(mid August), 10th out of 491, and do it in a 1 hour and 35 minutes. I choose mavic open pros because they seem to be the best deal available around Columbus, Ohio, and I've yet to see any Campy wheels in any of the lbs I've been in. I'm not sold on the low spoke count wheels, and while I recognize that some wheels are made better than others, I have to consider the additional road buzz that these wheels will have you feeling. I've done well with what I have, and my back ups are also ultegra and mavic.
My one exception is a set of velocity aero head rims laced to dura ace hubs. I find that the velocity rims roll best with 700cx23c, and that any size larger tire will cause these rims to react sluggishly. This proved to be a valuable lesson is gauging a wheels quickness, since it seems that with dura ace hubs it shouldn't have been a problem, but it was. My mavic cxp 21's are lighter than the velocity rim, yet they booth seem about the same age, and my mavic cxp have 105 hubs with 700cx25c tires. Yet I have no problem with get up and go with these rims, but these velocity rims want a specific set up in terms of the size of the tire mounted on it. Well, I'm really looking forward to a really satisfying riding season. Good luck to all of you.
