howdy from Ohio

I'm Amanda *waves*

I've been ghosting on these forums for awhile for bike advice. I'm a super bike newb, having just started riding regularly since last spring. I ride a 1970 Raleigh lady's bike, named Sallie. Sallie's been a good starter bike (and was cheap) but I'm dreaming of something faster and, well...something that isn't a thousand pounds of slightly rusty old steel. Not that I exactly need a high-tech fancy racing getup either. Just something that works a bit better in an "oh crap I'm late for my meeting" situation, ha.

I'm mostly a commuter, and my commute isn't even terribly long. As I've gained confidence, I've been biking more and more just to get around the city, going a bit further each time. I love the feel of being on a bike 1000x more than being in a car- no gas and easy parking are just bonuses And I'm finding that distances aren't half as far as they seem on paper.

I have a lot to learn and I'll be reading up on the advice everyone has, particularly with regards to buying my next bike (whatever that ends up being) and hopefully becoming a more confident city biker.

Welcome Amanda! I used to ride in Columbus when I went to OSU and you are truly blessed there with all the bike paths Columbus has! Take advantage of them! I miss them now that I live with my family in Dover (NE Ohio).

I ride quite a bit on main roads and I do all I can so that motorists see me... Helmet with reflective sticker, bright color reflective clothing, lights, etc... The brighter the better! This way if anyone would by chance hit me on the bike they can not say that they did not see me!

Im in Columbus too, cant recommend Paradise Garage (in the Short North) enough for shopping for a new commuter. Also, check out Yay bikes! facebook page if you want to start doing some group rides.
