New Guy from South GA

Ok guys and gals,
My wife and I are starting to get into cycling for enjoyment and exercise. Of course the jump feet first with $500+ bikes just wasn't going to happen, as we need to make sure that we stick with it for now.

I purchased a practically new Schwinn Clear Creek for $40 and began looking for a bike for my wife. Besides being heavy and the shifters needing adjustment, the bike rode pretty good. A friend I work with offered me his old Mongoose DXR for free. It is a $130 Wally world bike, but hey, free is free. Of course my wife doesn't like it as it is just way too manly

Well, I found a pretty good deal on some older Treks, and having owned an older Trek before, they are mules. I figure this would be a good entry level bike to make sure we like the sport, and if not we can at least get most of our money back by selling them. I probably paid too much at $100 a piece, as it looks like models of this age can be had for $75, but they are very clean and bikes around this area go fast and at a premium, due to living 30 minutes from Florida State University where Freshmen can't drive, and most students ride bikes anyways.

First step is to sell the Schwinn. A day later, I had a guy come pick it up for $85, remember, I paid $40, so that is a win. And I stole the back rack off of it to go on my Trek 830. I also did my homework and my wife's green Trek 800 Antelope and my black Trek 830 Antelope are 1992 models. Older than I had in mind, but they are in really good shape for the age.

First test ride, before I really got to clean them up real good and properly lube them, the wife's 800 is having trouble shifting, the friction levers are gummed up. Off to Wally world to pick up their $5 Bell cable kit to replace her cables. First time I have ever worked on a bike, and let me just tell you I love it. I am not sure what it is, but I enjoy the heck out of fiddling with the gears, etc. Picked up a cheap repair stand yesterday to get me off of the ground working on the bike upside down.

Only a few minor adjustments to the rear gears, and finish up the brake cables tonight and hers is good to go, and I start on mine.

I know many people advise against spending money on these older bikes, but I could really see myself keeping this one, and if anything just stripping it, and having the frame powder coated to make it fresh. That is if I do decide to keep it down the road and not upgrade to another bike.

To anyone that made it this far, I am sorry that I was rambling.

I look forward to all of the information this forum has to offer.

Hello nolefan,

Welcome to Bike Forums.
Used is the best way to start.

Now after reading all that, you need to post some pics.
