Hello from Ashburn, Virginia

Hello, I'm John from Ashburn, VA.

I'm a father of three - I ride when they let me.

Last August my wife sent me to the basement to do some
cleaning - I beleive her real motive was that I would
rediscover my bike and get a little excercise. Well, it
worked, maybe a little too well. I definitely caught the
fever and have been riding and buying cycling gear whenever
I can.

I live about a quarter mile from the W&OD Trail - when
I'm on my bike, that's generally where I'll be. The W&OD
is a former railroad line through Northern Virginia, converted
into a 45-mile long, paved, multiuse trail in the 1980s. Below
are links to useful information:

Northern Virginia Park Authority:

Friends of the W&OD Trail:

Some excellent historical information including images and video:

I have a Trek 820 (intro-level mountain bike) that I bought in
1996, but as I spend 90% or more of my riding time on the W&OD,
I'm in the process of adapting it more for the road. Hopefully
next Summer I'll be in the market for a real road bike, as I'm
craving greater speeds and greater distances. But, I'm not a racer,
so I may be looking for a somewhat more comfort-oriented bike
(though not a hybrid). I've been researching Trek, Specialized and Giant
so far. In the meantime, I'll just keep hoping that knucklehead at
the convenience store sells me the right lottery ticket sometime soon!

Happy New Year,

John Davis

Hi John, nice introduction, and many welcomes to the forum! There seems to be a rash of what the industry is terming "plush" road bikes coming out. You may just be entering the market @ the right time. You may also want to investigate cyclocross bikes, as they accept a larger volume tire, and are quite versitile.

Good luck with your research - you'll find some great information right here. Just click on the search function above. Post a pic of your new machine when you get it!
