New old guy from Texas
Well, just found this forum and registered. Now for the obligatory introduction.
I'm 58 and live in Austin, Texas. A great city for riding bikes I'm told. I don't really know because I just bought the first bike I've owned since I was a kid. I've pretty much ridden motorcycles my whole life but haven't owned a bicycle since I had a clone of a Schwinn Sting Ray in elementry school.
My wife has some health issues, well, many health issues. A seizure caused her to lose her driving priveleges for 6 months last month. So she says she wants to get a bike and start commuting to work. I consent and we go off bike shopping. We go to a local neighborhood shop and to say I was shocked by the different types of bikes available today would be a gross understatement! WOW!
We explain what is going on and what we're looking for and he is able to narrow the vast array of choices down to a manageable few. (I'm so glad I didn't just go to a big box store!)
My wife tries a few but since she has had fusion on her back most of them hurt her. He understands the problem and directs us to a bike that didn't hurt and he was able to make it fit her perfectly. A Red (kind of) Raleigh Venture. Not only that but he helped us set it up to carry all of the stuff she seems to think she needs at work! OK, I admit that some of her stuff is necessary but come on....Her purse is like a small duffel bag!
Of course with all this bike shopping I get the idea that maybe I would enjoy one too. My off road days were over long ago so a mountain bike wasn't really in my sights and even in the "Land of Lance" I have no desire to wear a yellow jersey, so a full on road bike wasn't interesting me either. But I couldn't take my eyes off of this flat black Raleigh Misceo. This seemed like a nice compromise to me and it fit well, and even better after he set it up for me. Needless to say, I bought 2 bikes that day! Not to mention a whole bunch of other stuff that you have to have like helmets and lights and racks and bags.
We have joined ACA and are signed up for Traffic 101 classes. I always encouraged new motorcycle riders to sign up for the safety courses so figured I should follow suit here too. We're even more vulnerable than motorcycle riders!
Well, that's my windy intro. Much longer than I thought it would be. I don't usually contribute much to these forums but always seem to learn a lot from them. So I'll just go ahead and thank you all now. Thank you!
The adventure begins!
