Hi from Boca
Hi, I'm new here (obviously). I've been to this site a couple times before but just signed up today. I'm 40, mother of 2 young kids, and horribly out of shape. I'm taking up cycling for pleasure and for fitness. I know very little and haven't ridden on a bike for about 20 years (save for the recent test rides while shopping around for a bike). I haven't got one yet, but I'm in between getting the Specialized Sirrus sport and the Trek FX 7.2 . A woman's bike doesn't seem to fit or appeal to me so I'm going for a man's bike.
I'm looking forward to biking around town and meeting new people. And also looking forward to losing a few pounds in the process.

Welcome aboard! When you're ready to ride with a group, the South Florida Bike Club hosts a ride in Boca on Wednesday evenings. The pace is pretty relaxed, and the people are very friendly.

Hi. Thanks, I've been looking around for a bike club in my area and that's one of the ones I've been looking at, but OMG, I'm so out of shape I don't think I should inflict my slowness on anyone until after I've had a chance to work up my endurance.
I finally got a bike yesterday. I got the Specialized Sirrus Sport. I rode the bike late from my house to 441 and back and I NEARLY DIED from exhaustion. I'm going to keep doing that every night and when that becomes comfortable, I'll go even further. *No* Idea how long that's going to take. I never exercise.

Congratulations of the new bike.
Ride slow and as often as you can.
Make it fun, you will become much stronger the more you ride.

My wife started after a 30+ year hiatus last summer and she looked like she was about to collapse after a two mile ride. Now, she does 15 - 20 without the slightest problem and we've ridden up to 40 with only mild tiredness starting to creep in toward the end.
The progress is very rapid when you first start. Helps to keep it fun and gratifying.

Thanks, I'm waiting for hubby to come home from playing soccer so we can go out riding. He does exercise. Soccer 4-5 days a week. He's also younger than me and never gave birth to two babies.
I'm going to start using runkeeper to track my progress. That should make things interesting.

Hello, tmmgeekette! I am new also, so I guess we should welcome each other! ) I am new to this site, and also a new rider. I haven't even had my bike for a month, and I've only ridden about 4 times, an average of 12 miles each time. I'm a 55 year old wife, mother (of 3), and grandmother (of 7). I've been retired for two years, and in that time I've been readjusting my life patterns. I'm working on a college degree (art), I've been into running for a year, and now I'm getting into cycling. My Marine son-in-law is the playful one, and he picks on me to challenge myself all the time, even throwing dares my way--which I have to accept! ) Because of him, I've turned into an athlete, which I was NOT, before.
Do NOT worry about being out of shape! That will all take care of itself, if you just eagerly get into an activity that you're excited about. The first thing I had to do was be consistent with the activity (in my case, running), so my older body could grow and adapt, and my lung capacity could improve, which it DID!! Same with cycling: be consistent with it, put up with a little discomfort, push yourself somewhat (not sure what your tolerances are), and your body will adapt! You'll marvel! )
My son-in-law and I got into road bikes (I loaned him money to buy whatever he needed), and I just went out on my first group ride yesterday. It was HARD for me because 1) we were going into the wind for the first half, and 2) I was the only one not using the clipless pedal system! I plan on changing that TODAY, btw. I fell way behind a couple of times, but the group did not leave me. I believe I would not even have done as well as I did, if I were not a runner and had my lungs developed! (I'm not a FAST runner, but a runner nonetheless...for more details, just ask, or else I will go off on a tangent here... )
Anyway...stick with it! You'll be glad you did!
