New to cycling, but not new to two wheels.

Hi I'm Jeff. I'm active duty Army and I'm completely new to cycling. I just picked up a 2012 Giant Defy 2 Road Bike. I also ride motos (Gixxer 750 & EX500) and being on two wheels is my passion. I'm from the Bay Area, CA and was hoping I could eventually meet up with some folks out here to do group rides.

Any pointers on how/where I should start cycling to build endurance and strength?

Hey Jeff,

Welcome to Bike Forums from a Texas road rider.

Short rides at first to let your body adjust to your bike.

Find a group to ride with and try to stay with the faster riders.

Local bike shops are good places to ask about riders and group riders in your area.

Thanks for the tip

Question, do you know where I can go to purchase some cycling apparel? I don't want to order online because I want to be able to try them out in a local store. Would any department stores carry any like Target, Walmart etc?

Never seen any at target or walmart.

Bicycle shops of course.

Larger Sporting athletic type stores would carry bicycle clothes.

I get mine from Nashbar online. They can be returned with no problems and have a sale today.

I went to my LBS (where I got the bike from) and they had a "hidden" section in the back full of clothing and gear. I kinda splurged myself and spent about $200 worth of gear. I'm a big fan of reflective apparel so most of the things I got are bright neon yellow. The jersey and jacket I got are both yellow, cycling shorts and extenders black and gloves black. I did end up getting an Enduro winter jersey that's black and silver but the yellow vest goes over it just fine. I had already purchased a pretty good Specialized helmet when I owned my MTB.

So anyways, I went out for a spin today. I went a total of approximately 25 miles and my body feels amazing! I really enjoy the skinny tires more than anything. I'm a little weary on traffic (from behind) but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I try to stick to the bike lanes as much as possible. Here in CA, we have LOTS of traffic is it's unavoidable.

Anyways, cheers for the warm welcome and I really enjoyed being out there.

Hey Jeff,

You did good with the clothes.

I use a mirror and a Dinnotte Tail light for Day Riding road safety.
