Illinois girl here! & advice, please?

Hey there. I'm new to these forums, obviously, because I'm kind of new to biking all over again. That sounds odd, right? Well, I used to bike alllll the time in high school (okay, that's only a few years ago... but still!), but I haven't really since, except for maybe a few times during the summers. Now that it's starting to feel nice again, I really want to ride my bike to school/work.

I sought out this message board because I need advice on picking out a bike. I have a Schwinn cruiser that I got because, to be honest, it's pink and totally adorable, also it was cheap. However, it's not the best bike for making real trips. Advice, please! What do you recommend for a college student (i.e. relatively poor - I'm thinking at most $200) who plans to ride it on the road for 10 miles daily?

I really appreciate any input!

$200 won't get you a very good new bike. As with most things the best deals are pre-owned items. Your local CraigsList is one source.
10 miles is tough to manage everyday on wide tires. Bikes described as 'hybrid' may be what you're looking for.

If you find a specific deal you're considering, post the details or link (along with your requirements) in the commuter forum and ask what people think.
Good luck and welcome to the forums!

Definitely best to buy used in your price range.

People graduating at the end of the semester often have bikes for sale, so ask around campus. And if there's a bike store near campus, check that out. They may sell used bikes or have a bulletin board where customers put up for sale ads. There are good bikes to be had on Craigslist, but the good deals get snapped up quickly so you have to have a good sense of what you're looking for and be ready to move fast.

Thank you so much for your input! I'll keep my eyes on Craigslist and visit the local bike stores, like you both said.

Welcome to BF Summerlove, the advice you got is spot on for finding a bike to commute to school. Watch those on-line sites like Craig's List and also keep the bulletin boards around campus in mind for someone looking to sell their bike at the end of the term. Best of luck in finding your next bike and in your studies.

Hey there! I appreciate your advice. I got a new (used) bike today that I think will work very well. My dad actually kind of surprised me with it: we stopped by a bike shop to check out the stock and one bike seemed to fit me really well. My dad then began making offers, which I wasn't expecting, but I'm very grateful! I plan to take pictures to show you guys, but before that, I'm going to go ride it. Thank you for the tips!
