Mountain biker looking to start commuting
Hi Guys!
I'm from Ontario and have been to BC (Whistler) a few times for downhill riding. I own a 2006 STP that I bought new and have since then converted to single speed and have a small Manitou Sherman fork on it. Great bike and have been using it to whip around town but Im looking for something new. I also have a Transition Bottlerocket with a Totem solo air fork, DHX 4, Juicy 5 brakes. I am thinking of getting a bike to commute 20km (hoping to do this in a little under an hour). I have been looking so far at cyclocross bikes because I want to be able to get a bike that can take some abuse but still be quick. Im looking at buying used, so far Ive found: 2008 Specialized Tricross Sport ($745) from a bike shop, fully tuned up. or 2011 Kona Jake ($950)- also just tuned up for sale used. Any ideas on other purchases, whether these are worth buying, etc? I have limited knowledge on road bikes + components. I'm sure I'd be happy with either one of them, just thought I'd ask here because people seem to know quite a bit on here, maybe some people have experience with these bikes. |
Welcome aboard :)
A bunch of people in the Commuting forum have rigs based upon cyclocross bikes- a couple even ride Kona Jakes. |
I do not have experience with either of those bikes. I am riding a Steel cyclocross for my Commuting needs.
I would pick the bike shop option, as long as you can get a rear rack installed in the deal. Add a rear trunk bag and your set. Upgrade with front and rear lights You will gain a new relationship with the bike shop and they will be happy to see you when you come back for upgrades. Good Luck. |
Awesome, thanks for the ideas! I think I'll head to the bike shop and see how I like it.

Ended up getting a 2011 Trek X02! Loving the bike so far.
