New in New Jersey

Hi everyone,

Another new guy here. I dragged my old mountain bike out of the basement a little over a year ago and started ridding for fitness. I hadn't really ridden since I was a teenager and had forgotten how much I liked it. I rode for a few days and told my wife I was buying a bike because I never did like that MTB but really wanted to ride. Anyway I have done at least five upgrades over the year and now have a MTB, road, and flatbar bike. I dragged my wife and 11 year old in with me. The 11 year old is just getting started but doing well. My wife is a bit younger than I am and in super shape from running her entire life and has some road bike experience from her tri days. I am/was out of shape and still a bit over weight so it makes for a mismatched pair but we are really having fun and enjoying a common interest and activity to share. We spent the winter on the trails and are now road riding as much as our schedule and my body will allow. After a lifetime of neglecting my body and mild arthritis I am having some issues but going to see just how much I can do with what I have. I will be spending a lot of time on the 50+ forum to see what you people can teach me.

Thanks for all the help.

Welcome to BF and good luck with your journey from a neighboring NY'er (4 miles from Mahwah, NJ). Not sure where you are, but NJ has a number of large, well-organized bike clubs that you might want to check out as your abilities and desires grow.

Regarding the arthritis, of course talk to your doctor and see what they say, but I've been amazed at how regular riding helps with my lower back pain. Often, strengthening muscles around/near problematic joints can help relieve some of the pain.
