Hello from Central TN.
Hello biking community!
My name is Jacob. I've been roaming about this forums for the past few months as I've started a bike project and have needed information regarding chain tensioners. I've really benefited from the wealth of information you all have and will be checking in often as the project proceeds.
I am currently attending Tennessee Tech.
Regarding my bike.
I ride an old Schwinn road bike that I found in the woods and fixed up. Nothing fancy, just a humble old steel frame that gets me from home to class. Perhaps I'll post a picture soon.
Regarding my project.
My dad gave me his road bike that he's had since the 70's. I'm not entirely sure of the model because I haven't seen it in the past few months. I want to saw the drops off into bullhorns and add some 200TTs that I just bought on Ebay. Of course, this bike hasn't been loved in quite sometime so I'll need to replace the dry rotted tires and tubes, adjust the spokes, brake pads, the works.
One of the biggest questions I've had (and in turn where Bike Forum has helped me the most) is having to do with the chain tensioning. I would like to set the bike up as a two speed with a tensioner on the back and a single derailer on the front chain rings. I've looked at the Paul Melvin tensioner which appears to be exactly what I need, but I just can't justify dropping 80 bucks on it. Any alternate suggestions for derailers? I suppose I could just leave the current derailer to hold tension, but if I can find a cheep tensioner, I wouldn't mind the sleek look.

Welcome to BF and be sure to keep your bike locked up securely at school. Bikes in school environments tend to disappear with discouraging speed.
